Anna & Kristina's Beauty Call

Debbie: stylish traveler

Season 1 Episode 26

Adrenaline junkie Debbie is looking for a stylish outfit to take her on a trip to Spain. As frequent travelers ourselves, we accepted her fashion challenge. Piece of cake? Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is our guest judge.

    Our Style Mission

53-year-old Debbie is heading off on a trip to Europe. She is looking for an outfit that will withstand the planes, trains and automobiles, and also a few tomato stains at the Tomatina Festival in Spain. For adventurous and picky Debbie, our fashion mission is stylish traveler.

Our guest expert is celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. He had these tips for dressing Debbie:

  • When I think of “stylish traveler”, the first person that comes to mind is Angelina Jolie. She almost always manages to look good. You don’t have to have the same body shape to capture the look. It’s all about attitude. Debbie seems like a pretty bad ass chick, so it’s up to Anna & Kristina to bring that out in her look.

  • If Debbie’s going to a tomato festival, I wouldn’t shy away from red. Have fun with it. I’m all for festive!

   Our Look Book

With $500, Debbie’s measurements, her “before” photos, and one afternoon, we hit the shops to find Debbie a tourist outfit that doesn’t make her actually look like a tourist! It also has to do double duty, so that each piece can be worn for a variety of different looks.

Debbie’s Outfit details

  • Lauren Vidal grey wrinkle-treated dress: $200 at Bodacious
  • Lauren Vidal ivory wrinkle-treated overlay: $180 at Bodacious
  • Sky blue scarf: $30 at Exposure
  • L.A. Express bead and charm bracelets: $10 at Urban Planet
  • Pelle Moda black “Agua” sandals: $80 at Lord’s Shoes

Perez Hilton‘s opinion

  • Hm. Well. Hmmmm. You can tell by the look on her face, she isn’t happy with it. In fact, this is nowhere near stylish traveler!

  • There are some good things about this outfit. The shoes are kind of cute, but how comfortable are they to walk in?

  • It’s kind of boring. Even the accessories; they look cheap. [Anna: Ha ha, because they are! We ran out of money.] $500 is a lot of money! I was expecting several looks.

  • I was expecting a stylish backpack. Where are you going to put all your things? Your camera, your money…

  • The top layer would be a good look for the beach, as a cover-up.

Did our style picks make the “Do List” or “Don’t List”?

Debbie definitely did not like what we picked out. She wouldn’t even come out from behind the change screen! We’ll be on the lookout for flying tomatoes from now on.

Perez Hilton did not think we achieved the stylish traveler look. But we liked his take on it: “This is not a failure. This is an opportunity to learn and do it again better next time!”

   Tip Central

So here’s what we learned along the way. (Hindsight is 20/20!)

  • Keep it comfortable. Buy non-constricting clothing that doesn’t wrinkle. Simple, lightweight fabrics work best, in many layers so that you can add and subtract as the weather changes across time zones. Also make sure they are thin enough to be stuffed into your carry bag for safe-keeping.

  • Colour co-ordinate. Go for neutral staples that can be mixed and matched, but be sure to include some colour. Accessories like scarves, collapsible hats can do the trick.

  • A great bag is a must. No travel look is complete without a bag or stylish (and secure) backpack to hold your travel and beauty essentials.
